Ok, so George W. Bush was the worst president in American history. A disaster and an embarrassment.

I get that.

What I’d like to know is: how long can the Obama administration and its supporters (and you know I am not one of them) say: “we inherited this mess,” or something to that effect?

At some point, it’s no longer about the problem you inherited and it is accountability for the decisions you actually make.

So, tell me…is it 1 year, 2 years, 4 years, 8 years, never?

Seriously. I want to know when the statute of limitations expires.

Obama and the Future of Race Relations in America...

Let's say Obama does win.

I'm curious...what would his victory mean for the 'race' discussion in America?

A few possibilities come to mind:

1. "ok, now that an African-American has been elected President, it's clear that America isn't a racist country, so let's move on..."

2. 'this is a good first step and the 'glass ceiling' has been broken, but there is more work to be done.'

3. 'Now race will get the attention it deserves..."

I'm just throwing out ideas here. Just wondering how it will be interpreted.

The Palin Conspiracy Theory

Image via Wikipedia So, the weekend has dampened some excitement about Palin. Clearly, she's vulnerable, though I do like her story a lot.

It's made me wonder if there's something larger going on here.

Stay with me for a moment.

McCain had to do something BIG to stop the post-Obama speech momentum in its tracks. With Palin's nomination, he did that. Aside from Gustav, Palin has been the topic of the weekend. Obama's speech? Ancient history.

And what did Palin's nomination do? It brought up the topic of experience, supposedly Obama's Achilles Heel. People calling McCain a hypocrite, etc.

Now, what if, just what if the following is going to happen?

First off, let's say that Palin knows that she's at risk for the state trooper investigation. Her career in Alaska is in jeopardy, so she makes a deal with the McCain team, straight out of Sun Tzu's The Art of War.

Palin is a diversionary tactic. She agrees to be the sacrificial pawn to achieve McCain's short-term objectives (stopping Obama's momentum) and in return, she would (if he's elected) get a Cabinet post or an Ambassador position. Something like that. 

Honestly, what is the next step in the political ladder for the Governor of Alaska, right?

So, with the intense scrutiny on her personal life (plus the revelation of the unwed teenage pregnancy now), she says something along the lines of "too much for my family" and then bows out.

This gives McCain a do-over and he says, "you know, everyone has been talking about experience, experience, experience and I have to, which is why I am going to nominate (fill in the blank) who has even more experience" and then his ticket becomes the ticket of experience, throwing the issue back at Obama.

It's a stretch, I know. Of course, if it happens, I'm a genius!

Ayn Rand, Healthcare, and some thoughts on Entrepreneurship

If you think it is the entrepreneur and private industry, read on. If not, this post may not be for you.

I may be too Ayn Rand in my outlook, but I've got to say, I'm pretty frustrated with the way that our system seems to be set up to make it difficult for the entrepreneur and small business owner.

I knew it was tough, but I didn't realize how (not sure if unfair is the right word) many barriers there are.

First, I blogged about Obama and his proposed self-employment tax. Frankly, there shouldn't even be a tax on self-employment. There should be a tax credit for it. How else do you stimulate it?

Now, I'm trying to get us off the ridiculously expensive COBRA family healthcare option and figure out a cost-effective way to get health insurance for the family.

Easy? Far from it.

Yes, it's easier than it was (I haven't purchased, but have worked through ehealthinsurance.com), but it seems like entrepreneurs are a group of people we want to keep healthy and, more importantly, make it as easy for them to go out and create wealth for others and for the country.

Anyway, just a bit demoralized at seeing, now that I am in the weeds, that the government doesn't seem to make it as easy as I would like for people to get their business off the ground.
